Back in Nijmegen, while the leading battalions of 43 (Wessex) Infantry Division struggled through the traffic and the rejoicing inhabitants towards the bridges that led to the Betuwe, the Grenadier Guards units that had captured the bridges were withdrawn into the town to meet the generals and the war correspondents. Sergeant Robinson was introduced to Montgomery and Horrocks, then filmed, interviewed, and recorded by all the correspondents who had missed the battle. Captain Lord Carrington recalled that

“The Duke of Rutland and I had found the German Army wine store in Brussels and had taken some of the contents with us in our tanks. Champagne is not improved by being alternately baked and frozen, but even so, I remember bitterly that Chester Wilmot drank my last bottle of champagne on that occasion.”
